Celebrating the life of

Vonny R. Farrell

Passed away on December 28, 2023

Vonny R. Farrell

Vonny R. Farrell, 68, died peacefully on Thursday, December 28, 2023, surrounded by her loving family after a short illness.

Vonny grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she was a graduate of Stranahan High School. She was a state champion flutist and a proud member of the “Marching Dragons” Marching Band.  It was also there that she met the love of her life, Ken. Together they attended Florida State University, in Tallahassee, Florida where she double-majored to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising.

In 1977, Vonny married Ken at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale. Their love was once-in-a-lifetime. Together they had two children, Kelly and Colin, who they raised in a home filled with love, laughter, and many loud debates. Vonny enjoyed two successful careers. The first was in fashion merchandising for Susie's Casuals in Florida and later Belk Hudson in south Georgia. Her second career, which she embarked upon when her own kids were older, was as a beloved teacher with the Glynn County Schools. As a social studies teacher at Jane Macon Middle School, she enjoyed imparting wisdom and touching young lives until she retired. Vonny’s many accomplishments included being a graduate of Leadership Georgia, President of the YWCA Board of Directors, serving on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, and serving as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, as well as numerous other awards and recognitions for her hardworking nature and spirit of service to her community.

Vonny was an avid reader who would check out 5-6 library books in a week and easily read them all. She was a passionate supporter of animals and the arts, and she was incredibly creative and talented. Vonny loved to cook, and her family was blessed to enjoy many delicious, home-cooked meals that she prepared with love. She took pleasure in all kinds of media including painting, jewelry-making, sewing, and making her home a warm and inviting space that her children and grandchildren loved visiting. Far and away, her biggest passion in life was her family. She was a proud swim team mom, devoting countless hours to driving her kids to practice or cheering at meets with the Brunswick Y Water Dawgs. Vonny’s favorite moments in life were when her whole family was together, filling her home with loud rambunctious laughter and playing cards. (She will forever get to draw the Christmas worm in every Farrell family card game.)

In addition to her husband, Ken; Vonny leaves behind her daughter, Kelly (Justin) Crosby of Cupertino, CA; her son, Colin (Ashley) Farrell of Tallahassee, FL; her grandchildren Jack and Caroline Crosby and Graham and Delaney Farrell. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan; father; and two of her three brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Vonny’s honor to the Live Oak Public Libraries Foundation or the Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia.

Vonny was more than just my mother-in-law; she loved me as if I were her own... she was my second mother. I am grateful to have met her when I was just 16, and over the course of 21 years we formed a great friendship and share many memories that I will always treasure. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and Susu to her grandchildren. She was often seen on the floor with her grandkids, playing games or reading them their favorite stories. She adored her family! I will forever miss her homecooked meals, which were always accompanied by a "Let's eat" yell from the kitchen. Susu, we miss you so much.
